Helping Playbook users to manage multiple subscriptions

To support business growth, Playbook implemented a multi-subscription model. I led the transition from a single subscription model to to this new structure.

The problem

Before this project, Playbook operated as a single-subscription service, with users paying a flat fee for access to all content and creators. Subscriptions were primarily managed via Stripe, requiring users to leave the app and use an outdated web page to make changes. The introduction of the Pay-Per-Creator (PPC) model added complexity. Creators had diverse preferences, such as offering discounts, requiring annual commitments, or limiting subscriptions to monthly plans. On the consumer side, questions arose about managing multiple subscriptions, using different payment methods, and modifying individual plans. With this project we had several goals in mind: - Seamless subscription management experience. - Efficient management of multiple subscriptions. - Reducing cancellations.

The method

With the creator economy being on the rise, I started by assuming similar challenges had been tackled before. I dug into competitor research and worked closely with my team and PM to analyze how other apps handled similar issues. It quickly became clear that to meet the flexibility creators needed, we’d have to build a modular UI that could scale easily. We tested a few different approaches before landing on the final solution.

I developed a comprehensive link map, outlining all user actions available on each page to ensure seamless navigation and that subscription upgrades were accessible from any relevant page. Then I designed the subscription card, making sure it could accommodate all potential variations while maintaining clarity and usability.

Solution

We built a scalable, modular interface that helps creators reach their business goals while giving consumers clear insight into their subscription status and costs. Using React Native, we created a smooth user experience—while a web page still opens, it happens so seamlessly within the app that users barely notice.

Outcome

The new subscription management page was positively received by both Playbook users and creators. We successfully reduced the cancellation rate by placing the cancel button below the fold and offering discounts to users considering cancellation. The design balanced the diverse needs of creators while maintaining a clean and user-friendly interface for consumers.
